Compliance Is Not Only About Passing a Laboratory Test

Successful wastewater compliance requires more than obtaining one acceptable effluent laboratory result. Manila Water reported that all 28 of its sewage treatment plants achieved compliance with government wastewater standards in its November 2025 monitoring results, illustrating the importance of consistent plant-wide operating control.

For smaller STPs, operators should similarly monitor trends rather than rely on a single sample.

Changes in DO, sludge condition, odor, flow, aeration, pump performance and effluent appearance can provide early warning that the biological process is moving away from stable operation.

Compliance is therefore closely connected to good O&M.
