Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment

Before major work activities begin, hazards associated with the task and workplace should be identified and evaluated.

STP & Wastewater Treatment Safety

Sewage and wastewater treatment facilities present unique workplace hazards.

Our personnel are expected to recognize and properly manage risks associated with wastewater treatment activities.

Biological Exposure

Untreated wastewater and sewage may contain microorganisms and other contaminants.

Personnel working around wastewater are expected to observe appropriate hygiene practices and use suitable protective equipment.

Direct unnecessary contact with untreated sewage, sludge, and contaminated surfaces should be avoided.


Confined Spaces

Treatment tanks, chambers, manholes, wet wells, underground structures, and certain process vessels may present confined-space hazards.

Entry into a confined space must only be undertaken when properly assessed, authorized, and controlled.

Where applicable, controls may include:

Entry authorization

Standby personnel

Communication arrangements

Appropriate personal protective equipment

No employee should enter an identified confined space without the required safety precautions.


Hazardous Gases

Ozone systems used for wastewater treatment and disinfection must be installed, operated, and maintained with appropriate safeguards.

Access to ozone equipment should be limited to trained or authorized personnel.
